Can Blepharoplasty Improve Tired Eyes?
As we age, the collagen in our skin tends to dissipate, causing a myriad of cosmetic concerns in the face. In particular, our patients frequently express frustration over signs of aging in the eye area, which are often immediately visible and difficult to conceal. What’s more, concerns like creases, dark circles, and wrinkles around the eyes can cause a tired, dazed, or even gloomy look to befall the face. Thankfully, blepharoplasty – also known as “eyelid surgery” – can be an effective solution for such concerns. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Corpus Christi, Cassidy Hinojosa, MD, has performed countless eyelid surgeries throughout her career, and her well-honed skill and attention to detail have helped her produce consistently exceptional results.
The ultimate goal of blepharoplasty is to reduce signs of aging in the eye area and rejuvenate the appearance of the upper third of the face. The incisions are meticulously placed to reposition and remove excess skin and tissue in the treatment area. Eyelid surgery can be performed using a few different techniques, and we can conduct either of the most popular two at our practice:
- Upper blepharoplasty: Typical candidates for upper eyelid surgery may experience drooping or sagging in the upper eyelids, which can contribute to an unwanted “worn out” expression. During an upper blepharoplasty procedure, incisions are made in the upper crease of the eyelid, a location that usually leaves little to no visible scarring. From there, Dr. Hinojosa can excise redundant skin, reduce the effects of fat protrusion, and tighten the weakened muscles as needed.
- Lower blepharoplasty: Patients with wrinkles, crepey skin, or dark circles directly below the eyes can benefit from lower blepharoplasty. Incisions are made inside the eyelid or under the lash line. Like the incisions made in an upper blepharoplasty, these marks can be placed inconspicuously and seldom leave noticeable scars. The puffy or hollow skin under the eyes can be sculpted, tightened, or otherwise contoured depending on your aesthetic goals. Dr. Hinojosa can also employ a technique called “fat transposition,” which involves redistributing fat into facial areas that lack volume.
Elements of both methods can also be combined to specifically target your areas of concern. For those with a severe “tired” look to their expression due to a sagging forehead, Dr. Hinojosa can combine blepharoplasty with a brow lift for comprehensive rejuvenation.
